To understand the importance of tradition and morality and the flaws with modern ethics and even water down Christianity. Since my return to the Catholic Church I’ve had this problem of making God into what I want Him to be and I think that by studying tradition He is becoming who He really is. It’s a great topic the two world views (ancient and modern) that you guys are studying may you reap many blessings. Congrats on the wedding! The way you worked St. Dodolinus in, made me laugh out loud, but thankfully my officemates didn't ask for an explanation.

Also, I've dug up a couple more details about St. Dodolinus from the A Dictionary of Christian Biography, Literature, Sects, and Doctrines, Vol 1:

DODOLINUS, ST., bishop of Vienne, called also St Dodolenas, Landolenus, Dolinus, and Landalenus, and possibly even St Bobolinus I. An additional difficulty is that Landolenus is certainly the same as Syndulphus. Can all these names mean one man? The synod of Chilons-sur-Saone was held under Clovis II but it is uncertain in what year, though it is supposed by Sirmondus to have been in 650 or 658. To that synod Landalenus (ie Dodolinus), bishop of the church of Vienne, subscribed second. In an ancient document on the antiquities of Vienne, he is said to have been made Pontifex Vienne "Leone vel Leontio Romanis imperante et Theoderico Francis, ac Sergio Papa." This would bring him down to about the year 688, leaving out of the reckoning Leontius, who began to reign some years after the death of king Theoderic. Dodolinus died, and is commemorated on the 1st of April. (AA. SS. Boll. April i.p. 30; Ado, Vienn. Chronicon, Patrol. Lat. exxiii.; Gall. This post deserves a bookmark as a g...Thanks, Matt. This post deserves a bookmark as a good and useful overview. Even more, I particularly value the way that you show just how far we can know, and where (legitimate) speculation begins. In the words of one of my favorite poets, Alexander Pope, you here "mark that point where Sense and Dulness meet" (51). Indulge me in a longer quote from the same "Essay on Criticism" (published 1711) showing the limits of intellectual activity and narrow specializations. Read these lines in an acerbic tone:
One Science only will one genius fit;
So vast is Art, so narrow human wit:
Not only bounded to peculiar arts,
But oft in those confin’d to single parts.
Like Kings we lose the conquests gain’d before,
By vain ambition still to make them more:
Each might his sev’ral province well command,
Would all but stoop to what they understand. (60-67)

So, there's a reminder of our mental limits to inspire intellectual humility & restraint--and yet of course we, collectively and individually, do long to know more. Psalm 8 and also Augustine's opening lines on the "restless heart" remind me of how we are spurred on to seek and know ever more, in both depth and breadth. May we do so faithfully.
May the magi (whether or not they went by the names of Melchior, Caspar, and Balthazar!) pray for all of us as we seek the Christ Child on our journeys, both intellectually and spiritually. Thanks again.
